Keeping Educators & Students Cyber Safe

CyberHawaii and the Cyber Readiness Institute hosted its third webinar, Keeping Educators and Students Cyber Safe. One way to make it easy for students to practice good cyber hygiene is to teach them the “ABC’s”:
  • A – Authenticate your account using a strong passphrase
  • B – Beware of phishing attempts and help students verify that you are the sender of the email
  • C – Caution students to use their video applications if they SEE your screen name calling.

Cybersecurity in the COVID-19 Era

CyberHawaii partnered with Better Business Bureau (BBB) Northwest + Pacific to present “Cybersecurity in the COVID-19 Era”, a webinar that addressed the most pressing cybersecurity concerns amid the massive shift to remote work. Panelist Jodi Ito, Chief Information Security Officer for University of Hawaii and an active member of CyberHawaii was joined by BBB Northwest + Pacific’s Chief Innovation Officer Dale Dixon for the discussion. Jodi addressed the uptick in cyber crimes and the recent recommendations and advisories put out by the FBI. Attendees learned practical ways to avoid the impacts of phishing scams, business email attacks and more. Jodi stressed the need to especially guard access to a company’s “crown jewels” – those informational resources that are foundational to the operations and security of a business.

CyberDefense 101 Workshop

March 13, 2020

The CyberDefense 101 Workshop pulled together cybersecurity and IT professionals and leaders in both the public and private sector. Attendees and panelist were able to share their knowledge, experiences and best practices to be more aware and secure of cyber threats. Panels featured insight on how businesses can get started on building a cybersecurity program to fit their risk profile, what cyber insurance is and how protect sensitive data. In addition, panelists discussed what to do in the event of a cyber intrusion, building a cyber incident response plan and developing best practices when it comes to email compromise, phishing campaigns and insider threat policy.

FUTURE FOCUS 2019: The Hawaii Innovation Initiative’s Forum on Sustainability and Resilience

Oct. 15 & 16, 2019

Hawaii Business Roundtable (HBR) and the University of Hawai‘i hosted the fifth annual Future Focus conference on Oct. 15-16 at the Hawaii Convention Center. The conference brought together members of the business community, higher education, and local and national professionals to focus on efforts to combat sea level rise and other climate change issues through science, engineering, cybersecurity and innovation. CyberHawaii also recognized its winners of the Cyber Security Awareness PSA and Poster Contest. Hawaii students from Sacred Hearts Academy, Kauai High School and Waialua High and Intermediate School were also recognized for their participation in the picoCTF competition, a computer security game for middle and high school students designed by security experts at Carnegie Mellon University.

The Defensive Cyber Industry Consortium Program Kick Off

The Defensive Cyber Industry Consortium (DCIC) is a joint effort between the Federal/State/Local Governments and Private Industry. DCIC’s objectives are to harden critical infrastructure cyber defenses and to synchronize response actions during an enduring cyber crisis. On Nov. 9, 2018, representatives of these sectors met to kick off this DCIC Program at the Hawaiian Electric Industries boardroom. The Kick Off was hosted by Ms. Connie Lau, CEO of HEI, and Major General Joe Logan, the Adjutant General for the Hawaii State Department of Defense.

Business Email Compromise and Ransomware – Mr. Will Bales, FBI Honolulu Halekulani Hotel

Business Email Compromise (BEC) is a sophisticated scam using email and/or other electronic communication to impersonate a business executive, employee, or other person with authority to request payments or access to employee payroll and W2 information on behalf of their company or organization. Since October 2013, the FBI has identified victims from 131 countries and a global monetary exposure of over $5 billion as a result of BEC fraud.
